Like many start-ups, the journey to Spktral’s beginnings wasn’t an easy one but was driven by the perseverance and determination of two relatively ordinary guys to do something about what has become an increasingly vital social and business issue: diversity and equality.
Our name …. what does it mean? Some of you may be looking at it thinking, is this a hip Scandanavian word? Not quite … although we have to admit that we’re always up for a bit of fika …
While not immediately obvious, our name has links to data and diversity. First of all, it’s a play on spectral clustering. Our co-founders Anthony and Innes felt it was an apt visualisation of the service we offer.
Vast amounts of data can sometimes be overwhelming, a feeling you might very well be familiar with if you are responsible for preparing your organisations gender pay gap report. We liked to see it not as a bunch of numbers, but instead a spectrum of opportunity.
To get technical … clustering is one of the main tasks in unsupervised machine learning. Spectral clustering is a technique with roots in graph theory. Here’s an image of what it looks like:
Plant spectral diversity is how plants differentially interact with solar radiation. Did you know all that? If not, hopefully we’ve shared something new with you today!
Now the team. We are a small but mighty bunch, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. When the numbers and data become a bit too much, we like to fika – although in Winter this tends to be sheltered from the wet easterly winds the blow around our office on the shore of Leith. Don’t let this put you off visiting us – there are some excellent cafes nearby!
Please stay tuned as we have lots to share. These blogs will provide you with valuable insights and inspiring ideas from us and others that will help you in what you’re looking to achieve. If you’d like to have a chat about anything you read or are interested in how we can support your organisation, please get in touch.
